Low - mass companions to Hyades stars ∗

چکیده
It is now well established that a large fraction of the low-mass stars are binaries or higher order multiples. Similarly a sizable fraction have giant planets. In contrast to these, the situation for brown dwarf companions is complicated: While close systems seem to be extremely rare, wide systems are possibly more common. In this paper, we present new results on a survey for low-mass companions in the Hyades. After measuring precisely the radial velocity of 98 Hyades dwarf stars for 5 years, we have selected all stars that show low-amplitude long-period trends. With AO-observations of these 14 stars we found companion candidates around nine of them, where one star has two companions. The two companions of HIP 16548 have masses between 0.07 to 0.08 M⊙, and are thus either brown dwarfs or very low mass stars. In the case of HAN 172 we found a companion with a mass between 0.08 to 0.10 M⊙, which is again between a star and a brown dwarf. The other seven stars all have stellar companions. In two additional cases, the RV-variations are presumably caused by stellar activity, and in another case the companion could be a short-period binary. The images of the remaining two stars are slightly elongated, which might imply that even these are binaries. Because at least 12 of the 14 stars showing low-amplitude RV trends turn out to have companions with a mass ≥ 70 MJupiter, or are just active, we finally estimate the number of companions with masses between 10 MJupiter and 70 MJupiter within 8 AU of the host stars in the Hyades as ≤ 2%.

An Adaptive Optics Survey of M6.0-M7.5 Stars: Discovery of Three Very Low Mass Binary Systems Including Two Probable Hyades Members
A survey of 30 nearby M6.0-M7.5 dwarfs with Ks < 12 mag utilizing the Hokupa’a adaptive optics system at the Gemini North Telescope has discovered 3 new binary systems. All 3 systems have separations between 0.120.29 (3 10AU) with similar mass ratios (q> 0.8, ∆Ks < 0.7). This result gives further support to the suggestion that wide (a> 20AU) very low mass (Mtot < 0.185M⊙) binary systems are exc...

We describe a high-precision radial velocity search for jovian-mass companions to main sequence stars in the Hyades star cluster. The Hyades provides an extremely well controlled sample of stars of the same age, the same metallicity, and a common birth and early dynamical environment. This sample allows us to explore the dependence of the process of planet formation on only a single independent...
متن کاملSearching for Planets in the Hyades Ii: Some Implications of Stellar Magnetic Activity
The Hyades constitute a homogeneous sample of stars ideal for investigating the dependence of planet formation on the mass of the central star. Due to their youth, Hyades members are much more chromospherically active than stars traditionally surveyed for planets using high precision radial velocity techniques. Therefore, we have conducted a detailed investigation of whether magnetic activity o...

A study of the stars in the instability strip of Hyades cluster has been performed taking into account the new estimate of the stellar parallaxes. For taking advantage of the improved accuracy of the distances and hence absolute magnitudes it is necessary to separate the photometric effects of close companions, which appear quite common in Hyades. The δ Scuti stars, differently from nonpulsatin...

We have been using the Keck I High Resolution Spectrograph to search for planetary companions in the Hyades cluster. We selected four stars from this sample that showed significant radial velocity variability on short timescales to search for short-period planetary companions. The radial velocities of these four stars were monitored regularly with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope for approximately 2 ...
